Overhaulling family room with ceiling beams (photos)

My family room (22 * 13 ft) has dark stained wood beams running horizontally across the room. The ceilings are 8 feet. The wood flooring is a honey color. The window and doorway trim will be white. We just removed the panelling and taped and mudded the unfinished drywall and primed it.
Now, I am trying to decide whether or not to paint the beams white or not, what type of trim to use around the beams. Also, the fireplace and mantel probably need an overhaul as well. Looking for all suggestions.

If you like midcentury style, I'd embrace the beams (but replace the mantel). You might try the home decorating forum. This sort of thing is right up their alley.

Thanks, I posted it there as well. I agree the mantel has to go. The beams need to stay, but I am lean toward painting them.
