Anyone have an opinion on keyless locks?

Posted by mbarstow (My Page) on

We are completely remodeling our kitchen and are replacing our exterior door. Are any problems with keyless (combination) locks. My husband suggested that maybe they might freeze in the winter, we're in the Boston area. I love the idea of not worrying about losing a key or carrying a house key with me at all times when we're out. Is there a brand that is better than others?

After a while, the numbers on the keyless lock that are used show wear. If you can change the combination periodically, this might not be a problem.

Oh, that's a minor problem and if the only one, I'd go ahead and install them. I am looking for people who love them or hate them.

I was a hall director at a Boston area college and we had them on all of our doors and I loved them.

An aunt had an old school version on her townhouse in Georgetown and it was fantastic.

I convinced my condo complex here in Central Virginia (the mountains...it gets cold here) to put them on the gym and clubhouse doors, which avoids the possibility of lost key cars (and old problem). The combo gets changed every 3-6 months. They have been on for about two years and we haven't had any problems.

My sorority house had one on the front door that you would have to punch in the numbers. It was only a problem when you came home late from the bars and everyone you were with forgot the combo....

I installed a Kwik-set battery operated keypad deadbolt on our detached garage entry door. We loved the convenience of the keypad and could easily change the combination if needed.

Over the winter it started not being able to retract the deadbolt without us entering the code twice, effectively giving it two chances. And now it has stopped retracting altogether, although the deadbolt will still lock. It acts as though it does not recognize a couple of the keys anymore.

It has fresh batteries so I believe it is defective and need to return it or get it covered under warranty. It is not yet 7 months old.

I plan to install one going into my home as we work through our remodel, because of the convenience. But keep a key with you anyway, for when it may fail.

Hope that helps.

Sandy

We rented a condo when in the DC area and they had one on the front door and we loved it cause we could lock up and not have to deal with keys all day or worse loosing a set of keys. I think it would be great if you had kids they would be able to get in when getting home from school and not worry about forgetting or loosing their keys.
