Our home currently has painted cedar clapboards. The north gable end takes a beating with our harsh New England winters (well, not so much this year). It seems like new construction in our area is going with vinyl siding and buyers are also looking for this in resales. Rather than siding the entire house with vinyl, we were thinking of just doing both gable ends with vinyl shakes.

Has anyone done this or seen this done? Would it look weird?
