What stone to go with for fireplace

We are putting in a new fireplace and wanted to go with the eldorado fieldstone, we choose fieldstone to intentionally help make the house more country rather than contemporary. The mason told us he doesn't think the fieldstone would look good with our house, it will look out of place and we should consider stacking instead. Our ceiling is 18 feet high and our upstairs opens up to the great room. We are now very confused. Any thoughts?
