Replace 30 cooktop with 36" without gutting cabinets?

I am replacing all appliances and countertops and would like to use a 36" cooktop. I have a typical 2 door cabinet under the cooktop and two 30" base cabinets on each side which I would like to reface everything and add drawers vs doors on some of the base cabinets. A builder has looked at this to see if he could modify existing enough to add enough room for the 36" and said no. We plan on bringing the cooktop out 2-4" rather that a straight line as it is now. Without being able to see the wall does anyone have any ideas or do I just need to take the plunge and rip out all the cabinets to include a 36" cooktop with 5 burners, either gas or induction?
