Need ideas for an air vent blocking cabinets.

Hello.

I've been wanting to remodeling my kitchen and I have ideas for it, however, there is an obstacle that I need help with. The vent in the picture. I've been going crazy trying to find a way to keep it functional, and hide it a bit without putting a soffit around it.

Ideally I'd want to change the current cabinets for cabinets that go to the ceiling, however that air vent is a huge obstacle as you can imagine.

I've thought of building cabinets around it and leaving a flat empty area for the vent so it can be covered and somewhat flush with the front of the cabinets. To be honest, I'm not too exited about that idea and the awkward, doorless and empty space that would be around it.

Any ideas or suggestions would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Which way do your rafters run? Can you take it up into the ceiling and then have it open pointing downward outside the edge of the new cabinets?

Or you might design a decorative grill into your cabinet layout, it wouldn't need to be too ugly if it matched the new cabinets.

Running it up into the ceiling and down is a good idea if it possible.

You don't want a soffit and want your cabinets to go to the ceiling.

How about having a vent/grate made into the new cabinets.
It won't be anything you'll find with your typical kitchen designer because they don't do custom even though they say they do.
It's do able but it will take thinking outside the usual box and filler strip.

Taking into the ceiling and venting directly downward is the best solution. You could also have the vent integrated into a cabinet. This tends to be more common with base cabinets, but the concept is the same, and a kitchen designer or cabinet maker should be able to work with you on this. Or you could buy a decorative vent and integrate the vent into the design.

My master bedroom had an ugly asymmetrical vent, and I bought two old, decorative floor registers on eBay. I replaced the ugly vent with one of the decorative vents. To create balance, I put the other vent on the wall as a dummy vent. This helped with the symmetry, and I ended up with a fun design feature on an otherwise boring wall.
