Silly, but...what should I expect from Day 1 of our reno?

How did your reno go on day one? What did they actually 'do'? More measuring? A lot of verbal stuff or real demo? I know it sounds silly, but this is our first foray into renovations, and I'm just sorta wondering what to expect. I'm sure it depends a lot on what you are having done.

We have a two-story open kitchen that we are making a one-story room with a bedroom (master) above. We are also adding a loft / expanding our hallway. So they are putting a new ceiling in the kitchen, and new room upstairs in the area that is now just air.
