Hanging cabinets on lath & plaster wall - best hardware?

Summary: I'm hanging Ikea cabinets on walls that are 1/4" drywall over lath and plaster. Will a #10 3" cabinet screw do the trick?

Hi all,

My wife and I decided to replace the cabinets in our 1913 Craftsman in December, one thing led to another, and we're pretty much remodeling the whole kitchen.

We're making decent progress, and are at the point where we can hang some new upper cabinets. The original plaster walls were in pretty bad shape, so we had a drywall guy in to cover the original walls with 1/4" sheetrock -- apparently this is standard practice here (Portland, OR) when the plaster walls are in bad shape.

The drywall guy located the studs for us, so that part is easy. But bearing in mind that the walls are a bit thicker than before, what type of screw should I use to mount the hanging rail for the Ikea cabinets? I'm thinking of using #10, 3" cabinet screws -- does that seem adequate? Bear in mind that the drywall plus lath and plaster is approximately an inch thick.

Thanks!

Couple of things:

It's a good idea to fasten cabinets together that will be side by side. Use trim head screws through the edge of the cabined face frame.

Consider the depth of the cabinet back and back rail + wall thickness. Depending on the width of the cabinet, and it's position relative to the wall studs it may be difficult to 'hit' two studs per cabinet. This is another reason to screw the cabinets together. So they are better able to support the other.

I use screws on the top and bottom back rails.

Using a really long screw you are taking a chance that you may dammage an electrical wire in the wall.

That is a bit over-kill for an Ikea rail and you may hit wires. 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 would be fine.
