Cracks in Kitchen Cabinetry

Hello

I had my kitchen remodeled in 2008 using a well known brand...big box store....cabinet manufacturer.

I went with stained maple. Anyway, I am noticing that the maple door fronts...not the styles...are showing what looks to be hairline cracks in the polyurethane topcoat.

Is this normal? And if not, what would be the fix for this other than a total refacing?

As well as the cracks, when you pass your finger over the surface, have you noticed any lifting of the edges of the cracks?

Cracks between components is 100% normal. Wood expands and contracts an the only way to keep that to a minimum is to control the humidity in the home by using AC in the summer, and a humidifier/dehumidifier in the winter as the house may need to keep between 30-50% humidity range.

Post some pics and we can tell you if what you have is normal cracking or is an issue.

Polyurethane is not normally used on cabinets. Usually the finish is lacquer, and most cabinetmakers use a 2-part lacquer, also known as "conversion varnish".The problem you describe sounds like the conversion varnish is starting to fail.
