Try a local lumber yard where you'll be able to find continuos matched grain wood paneling in the species of your choice.

Budget, now that's a different issue.

You could also check out the Eichler network for sources of newer paneling replacement options. It comes up a lot for people trying to restore those homes.

You won't find it at the big box stores unless you go the luaun route (which CAN work in some places if you're willing to go through a zillion sheets to find a decent one).

Based on the reaction to paneling on HGTV I think it is probably passe. However...we are putting up beadboard paneling in our new cottage.

so what I'm finding is that Hardwood Paneling is indeed passe, also a fire hazard (outlawed by many building codes unless backed by wallboard), and the new fur (real Hardwood depletes rainforests).

Sigh 8-(

Are you sure veneer isn't okay? Did you have the big sheets before or the stuff with the grooves? Veneer isn't necessarily bad--it can get you better-looking paneling.

Seems a shame to undo a cool 60s feature. What about stone?

What about some cool wallpaper on just that wall? There's some great stuff out there now.
