Closet Sides

We're just about ready to start wall boarding the closets that we have framed in the utility room, but one thing keeps nagging at me.

Typically we see any closet with "sides" which decrease the opening width of the closet. We wanted the maximum opening we could have (have to have bypass doors), so instead of making a 59" opening we opted for a 63" opening. Not a lot but every little bit helps. In addition, it will be easier to tile around since there will be fewer corners.

We've seen closets that have trim on the front SIDE of the door which we would still also be able to do. Our previous closet thAT we enlarged didn't have any sides and something did seem a tad off (newer home) but considering the bypass doors were 48", the opening would have been more unbearable to get into.

What is the reasoning behind decresing the closet opening on the sides? Looks? Some kind of function?
