How strong does a countertop bracket need to be?

We are creating a small peninsula breakfast bar in our kitchen - we have an 11" deep cabinet/shelving with a butcher block countertop that extends 12" past the edge of the cabinet to create a small eating area. I know we need corbels or countertop brackets to help shore it up, but quite a few we've looked at (Ikea and similar cheap places) have max load weights of 33 lb or similar. That seems WAY too little to me! Or do I just lean too heavily on countertops? The cabinetry is bolted to the floor and the side of the countertop is attached to the wall, so maybe the brackets are just insurance...but I'd like the counter to hold up if one of my kids decides to hoist himself up into his seat. Is there a max load I should be looking for?
