RECIPE: hickory nut meats

We have a lot of shagbark hickory trees, and the sky is falling with hickory nuts, husks coming off when they hit the ground. We are picking them up, but don't know what to do with them. A friend told me to boil the shells, bad ones floating to the top and toss those. Lay them out to dry for at least a couple of weeks or more and they will shell better. She said to expect about 1/4 cup per pound of nuts in the shell.

Does this sound correct. I would appreciate an answer. Thanks. Suzanne
