My friend did this (so I know it can be done). They moved from the PNW to Ontario Canada... And, I can't speak to cost.

We've always packed ourselves and hired a company to load/unload and drive their own truck. The cost will vary depending upon the distance and instate versus out of state moves. Most companies will give you a free estimate.

Yes that is doable. I did it 2 months ago, moving from NH to VA. I did all the packing (and not a thing was broken!) and they just loaded and drove. About 9000 lbs and it cost about $3800. They did wrap and cushion all the furniture pieces, but I took care of boxing up all belongings. This was with Allied Van Lines.

I moved from the Midwest to the eastcoast. Moving company cost $3,300, for less than a one bedroom apartment because I sold as much as possible.

Returning to the midwest 7 years later, I drove the U-haul, but hired people to load in my boxes and furniture. $1,000.

I preferred the return trip. Nothing was lost or broken, unlike the trip out. :(
