Is an Agreement of Sale Legally Binding?

In a previous post, I discussed terminating the sale of our house due to stalled repair negotiations. Yesterday, our agent forwarded an email to us from an attorney informing her that our buyers want us to reimburse them for inspection expenses, because when terminated, we were not acting in good faith. Not only were these buyers unwilling to agree on the repairs, they never produced a mortgage commitment.

According to their attorney, emails between agents/buyers/sellers regarding the repairs also discussed extending the closing. He also said that would include all dates associated with the closing. Our agent responded (to attorney) that no formal requests or extensions were signed by either party as required by the Agreement of Sale. The attorney insists that the emails discussing the repairs and possibly extending closing were enough.

Today, our agent's manager said that she would contact their legal department, but my agent also hinted that we may have to hire a lawyer. Does that mean the Agreement of Sale is only binding when convenient?
