They look like tin ceiling tiles...they could be actual metal..or faux, made out of the same or similar material found in standard ceiling tiles.

They should be fairly easy to remove. They may have been installed simply because the seller likes the look, or they may have been used to cover a less than desirable ceiling. Without any visual clue of a problem (leaks, etc) there is no way to know until you remove them all..

Really need a better pic to see what is there. I could be tin or it could be wallpaper oe it could be ceiling tiles. Very hard to tell from the angle of the pic.

Looks like the 'tilers' are a little small for real metal (AKA 'tin').

Tap on them with your fingernail and see if they are a hard surface or soft.

Get a closer photo. It looks a lot like my mop stomped ceiling.

It looks like Armstrong ceiling tiles. It could be made of a material (I forget what it's called) that is NOT good to breathe, so if you are removing it, please investigate what's in it first.
