I sold my home and am wondering about the proper protocol. After taking down pictures and other decorations on the wall, do I also pull the nails and other things that we used to hang the pictures or just leave them on the wall? I can pull everything and spackle the walls, but I don't know that I still have the correct color paint for all the rooms.

Leave them. You could do more harm than good. IF the new owners don't like where they are let them take them down. I've found very often after buying a house the picture hangers left behind often work for my stuff too.

The hangers are fastened to the property and generally stay. The objects hanging from them are personal property and go.
