| "...my mind is a swirling vortex of creative possibilities!" (To quote Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles) I'll be starting with a Spring theme and my challenges are using fusible applique and some bold contrasting colors. Let the fun begin! Kate |

I am doing spring first and I think I will do my ever failing applique, maybe in fused with blanket stitch. Jeane |

| I think all of mine will be Christmas or Winter themed as I want to give them as gifts next winter. I've already started one and it will probably embody several new techniques for me in this one project....row quilt, machine quilting (using metallic thread), heat affixed cystals and beading embellishments. I'm not working with any kind of pattern, and I've never machine quilted, so I'm a little nervous about it. Do I need to get any special needles for the sewing machine? |

| I am going to do Winter first. Since I have picked a multi-dimensional project (Calico Cat door stop) hopefully I will learn the techniques needed to make several for gifts next year. The techniques that I will need to learn is how to enlarge patterns and make templates to cut and piece fabric. I am also going to embellish the fabric using beads/buttons/threads etc. I am excited to try something new and hopefully learn several new techniques along the way! Susan |

| You know what I think will be interesting? To see what we're thinking now, our thoughts as we go along, and what it ends up to be. This will be a nice journey..... I'm using a pattern called Spring Chickens and it's in homespuns. I've not worked much with homespuns. I was thinking about leaving the edges to fray to look more feathery....is that ok to do with homespuns? The pattern came from Meme's Quilts......I think Vicky posted the site.....some really cute ideas there. Sharon |

| Mom, I bought a couple of patterns from that website too. I think I'll be using one of them for my second project this year. Salijo |

| I'll be doing Spring first as well. I'm going to take the opportunity to finish a WIP, though. It's a wallhanging that I've been working on for years and I need to get the hand applique finished on it. |

I'm starting with spring. It's called Sunshine wallhanging. I'm using a book called Herky Jerky by Kathleen Parman it's an applique technique. Im wanting to learn various ways to do applique. This looks like it may help me practice free motion quilting too. Either way its something I've never done before and want to try. |

As we are discussing what we are making I will elaborate. I choose a pattern I wanted to make from a 2007 Mc Calls Quilting. It is called "Charming". It is challenge for me as it is all hand applique with 169 sqs. of different fabric (another charm pc.). I also plan on hand quilting. I have it started. Jayne |

| I started doing some sketching last night and after tossing several pages of graph paper on the floor I think I've got the basics of my design. I'm certain it will change before it gets done, but I'm pretty excited about it. It's definitely a stretch for me, but that should be fun. I think I'm going to try using some of the fabric crayons too. |

| We have 79 days left....how is everyone doing? I've been working on mine, but it's frustrating. I'm used to sewing! These chickens and their parts are fused on, so there's a lot of cutting pieces. To save myself aggravation (I refuse to become aggravated and besides it's my project and I can do what I want), I'm only doing 4 blocks instead of the 6 it calls for. The eggs and flowers in the sashing and borders can still be applied, so no big deal. Their bodies, beaks and wings are cut and hope to get their waddles and combs done today. Everyone's ideas sound awesome!!! Pictures by the end of March, please.....whether they're completed or not. @:) SharonG/FL |

All this talk about applique work has given me incentive to take an Heirloom Machine Applique class that is being taught by Judy Shapiro at the LQS. Anybody hear of her? Usually these classes get you started and it is up to you to finish (or go forward) on your own. That's my challenge for this - what it will end up as (wallhanging - pillow - unfinished block)I don't know yet. I also want some formal instruction on machine applique to finish a PP block in a series I am working on - that is finished to the point of the applique-so maybe I'll have 2 pictures - big maybe. Sharon -The challenge of learning a new skill for this is my incentive whether I finish or not-so your 'challenge' is working on me. |

I'm done and my project turned out to be a total change of plans. I'll use my ideas for a Spring wallhanging for the next one. This one was inspired by the unusually cold weather we've had this year and all the brown leaves in my landscape, combined with my desire to do nothing but curl up on the sofa with my 3 cats. It's a small piece with a paper pieced center and it's embellished with ribbon, beads, and some decorative cording. When do we get to post pictures? Kate |

I have done 2 of the three table runners at this time. I have been collecting fabrics for the March table runner. I will prolly start it this week. Linda |

| Well, I'm further along with my second project than my first (which has the top pieced)....but my second project just needs the binding and a casing sewn on back for a dowel. I'm going to work on that tonight, and it's a Summer theme instead of Christmas. I'm really excited about this project. It's not very big, although my performance of this technique is totally cr-- ...um, not good, but it's my first time doing this type of thing. It's also a gift for someone, who I hope will look past the juvenile effort and appreciate it for the fact that I stretched myself to make it. Salijo |

| Kate, If possible, I'd like to wait at least until March to post pictures. Wouldn't make the rest of us look so bad. @:) Linda, You're ahead of schedule, too. Might be a good thing as you don't know what's happening the rest of the year. @:) Salijo, Great job for being so far along on your project...so, your second project has turned into your first project....No problem, whichever one is done by the end of March. Whoever you're giving it to will love it because you made it just for them! I have 2 of 4 blocks with chickens and all their parts fused. Will probably get the other 2 done this week and then can work on the eggs and flowers for the sashings and border. I'm thinking to just zig-zag as this is supposed to have a 'whimsical' appearance....works for me! SharonG/FL |

Sharon, I'm going with spring and a folded flower technique. I have to figure out what she is talking about in the book lol! Her pics are pretty. Rosa |

| Hey, Rosa. Even if you don't figure it out, we'll never know, so start folding! LOL |
RE: 2010 Jan-March Seasonal Challenge

| I'm basically finished with Project #2 which became Project #1. I just need to sew some tabs and attach them at the top of the wall hanging to go onto a dowel. Salijo |

| OK ladies, I'm going to keep this thread going through March but will also start a new thread for the pictures. I'll be lucky to get the top completed on mine since more of my time was taken up with things I hadn't counted on, but that's ok.....no stress! SharonG - back home in Florida after a surprise BD party for Salijo in Indiana.......Yes, she was surprised! |

| Well, I was going to start with winter - but I was drooling over making a Dresden plate (thanks to the tutorial at Missouri Star Quilts). So that's what I made, using a charm pack of "spring" colors. Anyway it's done and I'll try to do a picture...but I still have a couple of months to make something else so who knows what I'll finally decide!? I guess that's the fun of quilting. You do what you're in the mood for and what strikes your fancy. ~LOL~ Susan |

| I know pictures have been posted and I'm the bad one for not completing mine, but since I've been able to get back to the sewing machine I have 3 of 4 blocks appliqued. And, since I'm doing QAYG, it's closer to being done than it looks! DH wanted to know what I was going to do with the backing fabric that's bigger than the block. After I explained it to him (fortunatly he understood), he liked the concept. I'm hoping Salijo can help me with 'shades for sashing' (just wanted to say that) when she's here this week-end.
