Pieced bias binding - lots of photos

| I start this process with multiple strips of fabrics in the quilt. I cut them crosswise (width of fabric). I usually use 3" strips, just because it's easy. All seams are pressed open, and you should pay attention to the color values. You will have a dark fabric showing up under a light. I only do this with like-valued fabrics.
I stagger the strips so I don't need to cut off a whole lot of fabric - just a few triangles:
Then cut the strip sets on the bias.
Cut as many strip sets as you need:
And now they are easy to join:
Try to use like-valued fabrics from your quilt. If you have drastic color or value changes, you might get color shadowing through a light fabric. These fabric are all about the same color saturation, so I didn't have any shadowing.

| I hit submit too soon, LOL. I cut the binding at 3", fold in half, press and sew to the top -the seams are all staggered, so no extra bulk, but that's where you need to pay attention to the colors. Then I treat it like any other binding. |

Very good tutorial Mary!! I treat it like a staight grain binding too. I just use the cut offs as scraps. Rosa |

| Yes, thank you very much Mary. Not only did you show us something really neat, you took the time to show us how to do it! I would have never come up with that technique. I'd have looked at it, thought wow, that's neat but waaaaaaaaay too hard to sit at a machine and sew small strips together, LOL. I already have made several quilts where this would have been a lovely finish. Making mental notes to try this. Thanks again. |

| Well, I'm happy all of you like it! You can, of course, make the strips much wider, but narrower just gets to be too many seams for my taste. When I do go to apply the binding to the quilt, I try to lay the binding around the edge and make sure I won't have a seam right on the corner. You can still miter the corner with a seam there, but it gets a bit bulky. |
