Quilting pattern for applecore

So, you guys know I've been hand piecing this applecore charm for over a year, and now it's winding down. In my head, it's winding down, anyway--really it's 3/4 done. I've got three more rows to do, and then I'll have eight more cross seams to put the panels together.

Eeeeenyway, I've started to worry about my quilting pattern. The one I see most makes a circle around each piece, kinda like a DWR pattern, that makes the end of each piece into a melon. I. Don't. Like. It.

I always thought I'd just quarter inch quilt it to help separate the 'identity' of each fabric. Far and away most of the fabrics are lovely bits, prints picked out just for this quilt, many fussy cut, several with gold metallic, a few solids, bright rich colors, and carefully placed to flow color wise (to suit me, anyways.) Now I've been reading my books, and a couple of different authors think it's pointless and boring to quarter inch quilt a single shape quilt. They suggest ignoring the shape completely, and quilting whatever design you wish--as though you were doing a whole cloth quilt (maybe not so intricate.)

I want a solid backing since the top is so busy, and I could draw my design on the back and quilt it from the back. Then my top would get my "back" quilting, which isn't quite as nice as my top quilting but it's pretty good and all the prints would muffle any too teeny or missed stitches. It would be more fun to quilt, and good practice, too. I like the idea of a whole cloth quilt, and always really admire them.

I've been mulling this over for two months. I thought I'd settle on what I wanted--but I'm not. I'm just driving myself crazy. The time and effort are no factor--it's all one hobby for me, I just want to do what ends up the most pretty.

Can you guys vote for me? On which way you think would be nicest?

I'll start by qualifying or disqualifying these comments by saying that I tend to do my own thing, for better or worse!

First, I'd say to ignore the authors that say it's pointless and boring to quarter inch quilt a single shape quilt - it's your quilt, what do you want it to look like?

Next, it sounds like the creative side of you is kind of excited about quilting it as a whole cloth quilt.

There is no 'right' answer to this - it is your creation that you have put your time, energy, thought into. What will make it more yours? Which method will challenge you/energize you as a quilter? Which one gets your heart pumping?

Don't agonize over it - have fun with it! And which ever method you choose, you will grow in your knowledge and skills. How was that for not being very helpful?!

I agree with Karlene--ignore the authors who think it's "boring" to just echo quilt each piece. My first thought was that that would be the perfect way to show off an apple-core quilt, but then, I'm not trying to sell quilting books. 8^) In all honesty, unless you want to show the back of the quilt, I really wouldn't bother going to all the work of doing showcase quilting on a busy quilt top where it will just get lost in the fabrics.

I'd go with the 1/4" stitching and then, if you think it could use more quilting, add another row of stitching 1/2"-1" inside your original quilting line, to further accent the shape of the "cores".

Mine is just stitch in the ditch...it makes a neat wavy pattern on the back. I just stitched from top to bottom between the pieces, then from side to side. I was so sick of it by the time I got it pieced I didn't want to spend a lot of time quilting it.

Rather than stitch IN the ditch, I think I would stitch 1/8 - 1/4 inch on each side of the ditch. It would make a lovely pattern on the back and accent each apple core on the front. Or my regular quick and easy out is a decorative stitch over the seam, perhaps using variegated thread. When (if) I ever finish mine, I plan to just echo stitch around each core. It will be my one (and only) completely hand sewn quilt.

I'm with Bev. I'd go a quarter inch on each side of seam in both directions. I think it would be easy and still give you a nice, custom quilted look. Allover would ruin it.

Thanks for the answers. Darned if I didn't need permission to ignore a book! It's funny, I really thought I didn't know what I even wanted to do--until I realized I was happy and relieved to hear you guys say 1/4 inch. What a looney I can be sometimes!

I agree with Grammy and Toolgranny. I would quilt 1/4" from the seam inside each shape.

When I started to read your request, my first thought was "outline quilting fo the shapes, 1/4" from each seam". Honestly.

As for quilting the way the "experts" tell you, I agree with damascusannie: they're trying to sell their books, so who's to say their opinion is better or worse than your own, or anyone else's for that matter?

I say, if you want to do 1/4" from the seams, then go for it! I think it would be great way to make that apple core shape sparkle. (I hope you applique a little worm in the border for some whimsy!).

This one won't get a border--it's already 108 x 126, and I'll bind it on the applecore edges for a wavy finish. Heh, that'll probably be another year from now! Of course, if I tear a hole in it like I did my first one, I'll be appliqueing another patch to cover it.

RE: Quilting pattern for applecore

108x126 WOW!! looking forward to seeing the pics. I agree, forget the authors.
When I first started hand quilting 'in the ditch' meant about 1/8 to 1/4 from the seam.
Now MQing 'in the ditch' is in the seam, but I never remember hand quilting in the seams.
Or did I just get it wrong LOL???
I am hand quilting a busy quilt now and hand quilting about 1/8 from the seams, anything else would be lost, but it does make the design on the block stand out.
I think an apple core quilted like that would be lovely.

I googled just to see a binding along the apple core edges - I really like that look - of course this is an itty bitty quilt compared to yours, but thought you might enjoy the picture of the binding & the quilting.
I have no clue who did this quilt - so can't credit its owner. I like it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Apple core quilt
