QofD 11/18/09 - Storage

How do you store your blocks, 1/2 sewn projects-all the stuff you are working on? I work on multiple projects at a time - in life ~LOL~ and especially in sewing. It would help if I was an orderly person. I seem to find things a bit easier in their disorder then when hidden away looking neat. I have seen the plastic block cases in catalogs -do you use them - do they help you keep track of your blocks?

I have seen pics of some of your "to die for sewing rooms". I will never be that organized and neat even if I had the space! So, my question is how do you keep your blocks and projects organized, but not out of sight? Sometimes I only have a few minutes to sew, I don't want to spend those precious minutes "finding " the right plastic box.

For small blocks (6.5" or less), I use the containers that the frozen mini-eclairs and mini-cream puffs come. They are perfectly sized for these blocks. Larger blocks are either on the design wall, or stored in sweater boxes, along with the fabric for the project so I don't accidentally use it up on some other project!

I have binders with clear plastic envelopes that are 3-hole punched that close with a velcro flap and I put small projects with their patterns in there till I get back to them.

There are lots of ideas in the office supply section of Target (or a like store). Just when school starts you'll find so many wonderful things in the school supply sections for cheap, like binders, plastic pockets, washable markers and pencil boxes for thread. I also have clear plastic project envelopes from there that zip and are larger. I have all sorts of things like that stacked as I work on lots of projects at the same time as whim takes me.

toolgranny-this is worth a big ole laugh!!!! I sell office supplies! for over 30 years! I am a dealer - owner - not school supply- different channel of distribution. Makes me crazy sometimes when I purchase those things retail - like the plumber paying someone to stop his/her own leaky faucet!

RE: QofD 11/18/09 - Storage

I store my fabric in containers (medium) I buy from The Container Store. They are see through which makes choosing easier and I use a label maker to identify what's in the container (2-3 ft, batiks, rolls, pinks etc.) I also use the shoe size containers for the smaller pieces or specific cuts. I'm a box nut and love to save different size containers I find that will serve a purpose, so I have some of those too. ~LOL~ I am fortunate that I have a closet in my "creativity room" that I use for my fabric and projects, so everything is kept fairly neatly in there. It's one of those closets that had big wooden doors on it and I took the doors off so I can see everything.

I must say that I still have little stacks of fabric from projects I'm working on around...but I think that just goes along with loving fabric and loving quilting!

I have a hanging six shelf sweater organizer that helps some. I'm like you in that I like to see things out and about for inspiration (sounds much nicer than admitting I'm a slob!)

RE: QofD 11/18/09 - Storage

Yes, my WIP (works in progress) are "out and about" where I can see them and be inspired, where I can be reminded what I need to finish up, and...and... oh! who am I kidding? If you saw my sewing room you would know that I'm a very messy but creative person!

Go out and buy yourself a hugely expensive quilting frame! Then you have the perfect 14' wooden shelf to line up all your projects in full view. You also have the bonus of two or three long rails for draping your quilt tops over!!

Oh, and if you're creative you can use the lights above to hang things from!

RE: QofD 11/18/09 - Storage

I've been looking at them! Sorta like the treadmill I just had to have years ago -
It made the best clothes rack - especially for my business suits at the end of a day. The only shoes that ever touched the moving part were the heels I wore that day ~ by the end of the week they were all lined up by color~LOL

RE: QofD 11/18/09 - Storage

Oh, Jennifer! Amazing! Now I have another reason for that huge frame I just bought. Thanks so much.

RE: QofD 11/18/09 - Storage

rivergirl, this is a great question. I personally have the "if I don't see it, it doesn't exist" disease, so most of what I am currently working on is lying around somewhere in the house .....

right now, my huge cutting mat is on the end of the dining room table, and there are some scraps to be tossed, and some to be saved lying on it, along with the wall hanging I put together last night. Then, next to one recliner in the living room, I have Kate's block center for the Round Robin that I am still working on (do you know how difficult it is to aim a tank turret at a butterfly???). On the other side of that chair is an envelope containing last month's lotto blocks that I won, and a bag with our minister's signature quilt pieces started inside of it.

Now, off to the bedroom where I have the machine set up, there is a small stack of block lotto winnings from Sept. on the back of the table, on the floor is a hatbox with a dozen blocks all cut out that ended up being the wrong size for a project (although each one will look good with all the others, but I couldn't put it with someone else's work due to size), which will now have to be sewn into blocks and then set into a top. Between the table leg and a little table with drawers in it is a box with fabrics in it (and some cut pieces) for middle daughter's graduation from college quilt. Thank God she's not graduating until Dec. of 2010 at the earliest!

I also have 2 different projects on the chair in front of my machine, another project under my bed on top of the boxes my stash is in, and a project under the foot of the bed that just needs to be quickly pieced and taken to the longarmer's house to back a quilt top she's got that is for my husband.

Oh, and don't forget the large laundry basket full of fabrics next to the dining room table so I have something to cut up when I am at the mat.

I wish I were more organized, but those nice see-through plastic boxes cost money nad I don't always have it. When I get a box or two, it seems that particular size/style goes out of style and I am now left with a ton of mismatched boxes/tubs/totes, etc., which makes for a nightmare of organization.

I didn't even mention the fish quilt that is started for my oldest grandson, the star quilt top that is ready to be quilted for younger grandson, brother-in-law's comforter his grandma made that needs to have many patches replaced and is draped over the back of the sofa in the living room so i can work on it when there is nothing else to do, and my parents' anniversary quilt that I have been working on since pre-1986 that is about 40% quilted.

No, organization is not my strong suit. I find I have too many ideas that get started and not enough hours in the day to finish them, so they "float" around, waiting for permanent homes.

Mine are in see through drawers, (new) pizza boxes, stacks on the table, stacks on the ironing board, and in bins under the cutting table (if you count the crumb blocks and strip blocks in progress). The pizza boxes hold orphan and extra blocks to be used later, the see through drawers hold things I started and really didn't get into, and the stacks of things are getting worked on, sometimes, slowly, when I think about it.

Basically, I'm just not very organized.

I have the blocks from the lotto I won a year ago, pinned to the wall. I have the cathedral quilt I started pinned to a different wall. I have the Dresden Plates I'm working on now pinned to a third wall. And all the U.F.O's are in neat stacks against the last wall in the room.......three of them.

The fabrics, I have a handle on. They are for the most part folded by type in those HUGE plastic bins, stacked one on top of the other. (I also have some stuffed in the closet I am denying are there, and in two drawers of the baby changing table.....sssssh I don't even admit it to myself).

I am another one of those out of sight out of mind sewers. They have to be out in plain view nagging at me, if I want to remember to work on them. Thankfully, this is all in one bedroom-turned-sewing-room. So, I can close the door, leave it out and not feel guilty.

RE: QofD 11/18/09 - Storage

Lots of ans.. I have an lg.old wooden cloths dryer that I have a pc. of fleece clamped to (my design wall), that is where I put my blocks for the WIP. I also have bunch of plastic trays that I collected while working in the OR that sterial supplys came on that I place blocks [about 12x18], they stack nicely on top of my stash boxes. There are others laying over the bars of the cloths dryer under the pc. of fleece.
I have another rack that I guess was used for drying with bars every 5 or so " that is the ht. of my closit door that is also used to fold my WIP over, Then there are the orphen blocks tucked away in a box.
I have heard the some people use pizza boxes [new ones] that work very well to store blocks in. Always sounded like a good idea.

My quilting room is total chaos. Apparently that works OK for me. I share the "if I can't see it, it's forgotten" disease, so everything is in stacks. (my offices at home and at work are the same!) It's not a system I would recommend but no matter how organized I try to be, this is what I end up with. I always say it's part of my creative process, but the truth is I'm just messy!

RE: QofD 11/18/09 - Storage

I have vowed that 2010 will be my year to get organized. Is everyone laughing with me LOL?????
This the first time in my life that I have a small quilting/sewing room.
It's a mess so I keep the door closed!!! When I organize and clean it I don't want to pull everything out and mess it up again.
Or I can't find anything!
My finished blocks are hanging on hangers with clips (skirt hanger???)in the tiny closet.
Scraps that I am in the process of taming are in plastic take out boxes, all over the machine table, all over the cutting table, and some are all over the floor when I knocked a box over. And there are some on the ironing board.
Fabric is stacked in plastic tubs and a shelf in the tiny closet.
I must clean it some over the weekend because the bug man will be here Monday and I am too embarrassed for him to see it like it is.
BUT HE DOESN'T SPRAY THE CLOSET!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay ladies ~ this was supposed to be "I am so organized and creative & this is how you can be too - in a few easy steps" NOT WELCOME TO THE I AM A SLOB - BUT CREATIVE CLUB!! ~LOL~ Only a few neatiks among us, so I'd say I'm in great company. Thanks for the validation.
One time we had a break-in at work. The poor Police Officer was preparing me for the mess in my office. I had to tell him it always looked like that - I didn't think anything was missing from my stuff. hee-hee

RE: QofD 11/18/09 - Storage

Mago, LOLOLOL....that poor officer had a good one to take home to his wife that night! lol

I love to get my things all organized....but it doesn't last very long because the juices get flowing again. i tried to get my scraps organized a couple times, but that's also in disarray again....need to start making crumbs again. But, the best containers for things I'm working on are the clear plastic project bags that zip....I have the combo set from EB's site and could use a few more. Something else I just bought are some good sized containers for blocks. They're see through but in colors. I have one with all my BD swap info in it, another with all the hot dish mat fabric that's cut and ready and I forget what's in the other one....will have to go look. Ahhh yes, how could I have forgotten the Wall Hanging Challenge! Those came from Connecting Threads and they're approx 14" X 14" X 3"..could use some more of those, too!

Rosa, How many times you plan to put 'get organized' on your list next year???? LOLOLOL Yes, I'm laughing with you.

Mago that is funny!!! In every other area of my life I am fairly organized, but I love any craft and would rather quilt or whatever than clean. I do keep my machines clean, that is what I am doing this afternoon.
Sharon it has been on the list 12 times so far in the past year LOL!!!
DH was laughing at me when I told him this is the year I am going to DO IT!!!!!
I made it through 4 months without buying more fabric AND THEN I needed princess fabric for the Christmas pillowcases. I also added to my scrap collection from the fall table runner.
The bags look like a good idea.
But I love my hobby and my hobby friends.
