DIY potholder question

teresa_nc7

I've decided I want to make some terrycloth potholders for my own use, rather than spend $$ for the Ritz holders that I like to use. I want them to be very thick and will use two layers of terrycloth. My question is, should I use some cotton batting between the layers and stitch a grid to "quilt" all three layers together or .... not.

I don't want to purchase the special heat proof stuff that is used for potholders. I don't think it is necessary as my old ratty Ritz potholders don't have any special material in them.

Any help is appreciated.
