Question of the Day 11/19/09

Do you always know where your project is going to 'live' before you start it?

I do a lot of drag alongs, utility quilts and comfort quilts that I donate to different organizations - anything from Tender Hearts which is for sick kids to cage blankets for the local rescue. I like to quilt as 'green' as possible and recycle everything from clothes to pillowcases (for doggie/kitty beds) to fabric found in thrift shops and at tag sales.

I also like to try new techniques and the decorative stitches on my various machines so sometimes what starts off being a Tender Hearts quilt ends up somewhere else.

While some projects actually end up where they were intended to end up from the beginning, I find that a lot of times what I think will work for one place or another ends up being better suited for someone else.

Anyone else like this or am I an odd-ball?

Most of my quilts are comfort quilts for employees where I work, so I have a pretty good idea where they are going. If they are for cancer patients, I try to match the binding or backing to the color ribbon for the particular cancer they have. As a general rule I make quilts from fabric, blocks, techniques or something else I want to try. Since they are smallish comfort quilts, if I don't like the pattern or combination of fabrics, I don't have a lot of time invested in them.

Most of my quilts stay here. The few I have done for others were either on commission or a specific gift.

There are some tops here now that I like but don't really need, but have no specific place in mind to send them.

I'm not productive like many of you, and I've never done crafts for charity. My projects are slow, and I've always had a person in mind from the start.

RE: Question of the Day 11/19/09

I make things just because I like the fabric or want to try the pattern, and then give them away to whomever seems to need/want one. I used to make baby quilts for my midwife to give away in her clinic, but she closed that down...so now I don't have that outlet anymore.
I HAVE picked fabric for a specific person (like camo fabric for my dad- he's a big outdoors man- and lilacs for my grandma), but I only do that if I'm making it for a specific purpose- like a birthday.
I think I"m probably one of those gals that quilts simply because it's fun...with no purpose at all behind it. I have no goals, really...I just want to have fun with it.

I've never kept a quilt for myself, though. I keep saying I should treat myself to a quilt...but I just can't seem to justify it yet. Feels selfish, in a way. :O)

I have to make a lot of quilt tops for classes that I teach, and it is hard picking fabric for a quilt that I'm not sure of where it will live. I've made some with kids fabrics intending to donate them to charity or just for baby gifts--those were all easy to find homes for. But as for the ones with everyday fabrics--I'm still not sure where they'll end up once they're quilted.

RE: Question of the Day 11/19/09

My quilts just pop out of my head when I want to try a new technique or color scheme. So, I have no idea if it will even get finished let alone what I'll do with it. This subject came up at our friendship group, also. I keep making stuff and if it isn't quilted right away, like a Xmas deadline, it goes on the UFO pile. Boy do I keep fabric stores in business. Maybe I should start making only miniatures.

Linda,
I've thought about miniatures a bunch! Wouldn't it be fun to make all these great quilts in small size?!

Could you imagine Amanda's quilt in miniature? Well...maybe not.

Lots of my projects start out in a class, a technique I want to try, or a kit I see that I can't resist. By the time I get around to finishing I often decide it will be a gift or for charity.

RE: Question of the Day 11/19/09

I usually have no idea. I have lots of ideas and projects in progress that I've chosen just because I like the fabric, the pattern, etc. Usually as I'm working on the quilt I'll get an idea who it should go to.

RE: Question of the Day 11/19/09

Good question! And one my mom & I have discussed lately. We both taught quilting for yrs & have many that were class projects & have not found a home - yet. I also just quilt because I like a fabric, pattern... But most of my quilts I know ahead of time where they are going. I like praying for the recipient while working on the quilt - esp for wedding, comfort/sympathy & new baby quilts. Most recipients have said it means a lot knowing they were prayed for during the making, which in turn means a lot to me.

RE: Question of the Day 11/19/09

I make tops out of patterns and fabrics I like with no thought as to who I will give them to. I have several baby quilt tops, a stack-n-whack top, a Chinese lantern top just laying around. I won't quilt them unless I get bored, or I find a recipient.

If I have a recipient in mind I try to make something they will like.

RE: Question of the Day 11/19/09

My quilts are always made for a specific purpose/person, so yes, I know where they are going to live. Or at least who they'll be living with. After all, my current quilts were made to live in a log home in Wisconsin and now they are living in a 1920s bungalow in Galveston, TX. They seem to like it here, though. 8^)

RE: Question of the Day 11/19/09

Galveston is a far cry from a log home in Wisconsin. Are you settled in now Annie?

I've only had four quilts so far I knew ahead of time where they'd end up. I keep making quilts I like and expect to keep, and then giving them to people I love. I think that happens because my quilts are such an extension of myself, it just comes naturally.

I've kept a few but only the daybed sized ones. But, for the most part, I don't know when I start one where it is going to end up.

RE: Question of the Day 11/19/09

I have a large fam hungry for quilts so I usually know where they are going. I have 2 baby quilts to make in the near future.
I like to try out new things so sometimes I do switch persons if I think it will not be their taste. Most of them I know their color preference and style. A couple of my sisters (oldest of 6 girls) think some I have made are too colorful LOL!
Sometimes I will make one and ask a person if they want it when it is finished.
Charity quilts I usually know before I make them.

RE: Question of the Day 11/19/09

Other then the things that I used to sell I generally have an idea where they are going even if they don't begin with a person in mind. Kids quilts I try and plan around their interest but I don't work too hard at trying to find personal preferences as likes and dislikes change too often. I try and work from my stash these days.
