I've made a few of these and they are fun to make. When quilting, you have to watch out for those flaps...that the foot goes 'over' and not under. (grin)

LOL Sharon, just like the 3-D pinwheels. I think if I do make these, I'd be tempted to top stitch them down by machine, and incorporate that as part of the quilting pattern.

It is a very clever method but I think I would rather go with more seams and get the bonus half square triangles. This seems like wasted fabric to me and gives you a flap you have to watch for when quilting. If you are looking for a more 'dimensional' quilt though it would definitely give you the 3D effect and it makes for very pretty, precise geese!

If you're doing an entire quilt with this technique, another thing to consider is the weight.....3 layers of fabric. I used my block in a sampler....

Good points, all. I make quilts in all weights, because I use them in all seasons. Our family actually prefers heavy quilts in winter because we keep our heat down in the bedrooms for better sleeping. The wasted fabric is a very good point. However, since the doubled over fabric is only 5.5 by 3 inches and is the 'interest' fabric and not the background, and it is cut from strips, this is a very wonderful stash buster for scrap quilts, especially for those people who tend to work up their larger scraps into strip lengths, like I do (since I also use them for braided rugs and things like fabric over cord baskets).

I made one or two just to see how it worked but never incorporated them into a quilt. Maybe some day.
