Okay I am just thinking out loud right now but what if you made a braided rag rope... Maybe take strips of fabric clip the edges and braid them wash (several times) then attach a O-ring and a Lanyard clip and tie the rope...
Another idea is just use beads.
Make a 2" squares into a tube add O-ring and lanyard hook...
Just ideas don't know if this is really what you are looking for... grace

This is not a quick fix, but I have picked up several free lanyards. I got two or three free at the highway patrol booth at the fair, they usually give some away, I have gotten some at the dollar store, and I have made some out of yarn. Knit or crochet yourself some. They will be different from any other. Hope this helps you out.
