I hand-quilt a lot and put needles through thick layers as I quilt often using a thimble. I buy my needles online from Joann's. They are Fons & Porter Utility Quilting Needles size 5 embroidery nickel-plated steel, with 12 needles per pack. I like them because:
- they don't bend or break
- they don't tarnish from frequent use
- they have a large eye to thread the needle through

I even bought these needles for my Mom who sews as well.
