I believe they usually fall into a miscellaneous category (that may have a name, but I can't remember) along with yo-yo and other such quilts. I think the distinquishing factor is the lack of the 3 layers, backing/batting/top.

Some quilt shows specifically identify a different category for these for judging, I guess some don't. I would have thought a show would specify that to entrants in advance.

If it's done right, yes...........criteria would be available well in advance. Personally, I think anyone motivated to do a traditional Cathedral Windows should be awarded a prize by default! I started one and it morphed into a very large pillow. LOL. I'd had enough when I reached that point. Sainthood for patience is also a possibility. I love them, however.

I've read a few rules sheets for quilt contests, and have heard it's not unusual for whole projects to be disqualified because of technical issues. I'd think whomever accepted your entry should have been forthcoming at that point what catagory your work should fall under and also believe it's rather short-sighted to narrow their fields of interet down to just 'certain' quilts, based on batting, techniques, tied vs. quilted, etc. There should always be a catagory to cover something with as much history and recognition as a Cathedral Windows. I am not anywhere near as talented as someone who would enter a show to be judged, except my wool tied quilt I have been tempted to enter into our county fair, simply because it reflects a type of quilt steeped in tradition, but will certainly check to see if there is a catagory for it before I do.
