I have had a small one on my sewing bulletin board for years...don't even remember where I got it! Some of them are very intricate works of art. I imagine they tell stories, too.

Since these gals live on their boats and sail mostly in warmer waters, I think she must pick them up in the various places they land and then arrange them in her quilts.

I have a whole drawer full of them that I got at a garage sale once. I've never figured out what to do with them. I thought bags would be good.

Mine are much like the one in the upper right corner but a bit more elaborate. Those pictures are great. Maybe I should try a quilt with a black background. Hmmm.

Does anyone know if the layers are left intact or if they are cut away after the applique?? Interesting concept. I have seen it demo. but can't remember details.

Jayne, my recollection is that they stack all the layers then cut away from the front to get to the color they want. I don't think any of it is cut away from the back.

Thank you Donna, That is what I thought but wasn't sure. The piece must be pretty heavy when finished. Something new to experiment with. lol

I imagine they are a bit heavier, Jayne, and that might be the reason they only make squares or pieces for clothing. But then again, there are a lot of various colors showing and not much is left of the background fabric. It reminds me of crude stained glass, but black isn't always used as the background color.
