Another label idea

I was just ready Teresa's posting about how to attach labels and wanted to share something I've done for years.

Whether I'm making a quilt for someone else or one to keep, I usually take a small scrap of each fabric used and put it inside the label before I sew it on. It's like including a patch kit with every quilt. The pieces don't have to be large - about 3x3 - and I don't fold them over so it lays flat and doesn't make the label 'pouchy'. It probably wouldn't work if you used many, many fabrics in a quilt, but if there are only 6 or 7 it works fine.

That is super smart, I love that idea!

You know, the "high end" clothes all come with extra buttons and sometimes even thread sewn onto a label or shipped with the item -- this will be one way to know the quilt is "High end" and ensure the "heirloom" quality of it!

How many times do we read about someone wanting to restore a quilt and trying to find a piece of the original fabric?

I think that's a wonderful idea. I think I'll do that, too. Do you make a notation on the label that there are "patches" inside? The quilt could get passed down or given away and the new owners never realize that it came with a bit of the original fabric.

Yes, I do note it on the label!
I don't embroidery my labels because that's not a skill I've got. Instead I use permanent fabric marker pens and do it by hand, so it's easy to add a little "(patch fabric inside!)" note.

I tend to get pretty hammy with my labels and include little poems or a drawing to make it more personal. (If I cry while I'm doing the label then I KNOW it will have an emotional impact on the person receiving it!)
