Yardage Needs for Baby Quilt/Also Price Pls.

Hi Folks,

Am new to making baby quilts & so far am only on my 2nd, both done Disappearing Nine Patch. My question pertains please to yardage needs & general price range(s).

Since I've been working either from fat quarters or my own stash, I'm quite uncertain as to yardage requirements. The sizes I've worked so far have both been approx. 36" square. Though I've also seen baby quilts in varying sizes like 40" square & 30 x 50", etc.

Are there specific or standard sizes that new Moms seem to prefer?

Assuming sizes as above, what would yardage needs be? Am guessing approx. 1.5 yds. each for the front & the back respectively, (assuming 45" goods & a plain back).

Also, what kinds of prices might one charge (to be machine pieced & quilted)? I have someone asking & don't have a clue what the acceptable range might be.

Thanks in advance, I really need some help w/ this.

Yardage will depend on what pattern you are piecing. I mostly use my stash and specialize in scrappy quilts so I can't help you there.

My baby quilts are around 40" square or 40" x 50" rectangular. I don't want to make them wider than 40" because that might mean piecing the back, which I am loath to do.

Prices for my baby quilts start at $120 (with a $60 deposit - I *always* get a deposit) for a scrappy style and go up to $175 for a quilt with lots of machine applique and special fabrics purchased. My baby quilts are always machine quilted also.

I stopped at a quilt store in Arthur, IL, today (Amish area) and the baby quilts they were selling, most 35"x40-42", were priced from $35 for a tied flannel "baby comforter" to $70 for ones that were hand quilted. Some had a central panel with with several sashings and cornerstones or were fairly simple patchwork patterns.

What was your yardage for the D9P you have made? Have you found a different pattern you would like to make? It really depends on the pattern to know yardage. I know I don't charge enough to include my time, but I'm not doing it as a business and I get enough to cover expenses and then some.

No Sharon, that's the point & my problem, I've only been working from my own fat quarters, am GUESSING 5/6 per side maybe, never straight yardage.

I may well do the D9P, if the giver of the Commission likes it, since it's so quick & easy.

By doing the D9P, you know how many fat quarters you've been using, so you know the yardage of what you've done already. If you have a pattern with more seams, it's going to use more fabric. You can see if you can find something that might be more helpful on Google. There are many easy quilts out there....keep searching, one will jump out at you that you'll want to make!
