Weather better???????????

Posted by rosajoe (My Page) on

We have had so much rain this year. It has been overcast and dreary for a week and my walk way in front of the house is green. I have my plants covered on the back patio but I think I have lost about half of them. Heavy sigh!! The entire month we had the heat set at 63 and it STILL came on frequently so we lowered it to 62.
What is everyone setting their temps to??????
I adjusted to 33 years of sunny Florida (minus the hurricanes LOL) and here it can be cloudy for a week and not rain one drop.
Yesterday was supposed to be sunny after lunch, didn't happen. I thought I could spend the day quilting but I just wasn't in the mood.
TODAY was beautiful LOL!!!!!
We went out to lunch, picked up a folded quilt block pattern book at the library, visited mom & dad, and then I spent 3 glorious hours playing in the dirt outside.
The rest of the week is to be overcast and rain so I am assuming those of you that have snow will prob be getting more.
I have been watching Orlando weather and it looks pleasant, how is every one else doing????

RE: Weather better???????????

Are you kidding. I live in zone 6b-Ks. We've had snow since Xmas. It snowed all day but warm enough not to stick much but by noon the temps started to drop from 33 now at 6:40 P.M. it is 9 and to drop more. Sunshine someone send me some. I am one of those people that also need the sun. All of you with no snow and sunshine have a good day tomorrow..

RE: Weather better???????????

Well, we have 17" on the ground from Fri/Sat. They just plowed our street at noon today.

We have another 10" coming tomorrow afternoon and into Wed. And hearsay has it more next week!

Very unlike us in VA!! Tomorrow's will be snowstorm #4 in 2 weeks!

RE: Weather better???????????

Oh Rosa~we are getting history making weather. Snow- Snow- Snow and more is predicted for tomorrow and Wed. We got over 20" in Dec, then a few inches off and on - then 6" last week, then over 3 feet of blizzard - high winds, drifting snow. And more tomorrow-they are calling for up to 20". We are between Baltimore and Washington. We never, ever get snow like this. The news said make provisions for 5 days - What??? I can't get out to get to the store & the deliveries can't get to the stores.
My DH had heart surgery a few months ago - so I've been shoveling all this. My decks on the back of the house still have heavy snow on them - the weight of the snow is bad. I'm sore, I'm tired, and yes, I am very cranky.
I did sew today.......I got 4 sections of a PP block sewn for the BOM. That lifted my spirits. And I refused to look at the snow that the snowplow pushed into my driveway, even though I tried to put recycling bins out there to stop that from happening. The snow is piled almost 5 feet high along my driveway & sidewalk- where am I going to put 20" more inches???

Our electric heat pump is set to 55 because our bills are so high $404.00 + a $650.00 propane bill for additional heat for 53 days - and our house is always cold. Okay - I'm done ranting like a crazy person. Aren't you glad you asked about the weather???

I hate rainy dreary weather. I like to garden,so I understand how terrible it is to have your plants get waterlogged. I won't see my plants until July at this rate.
I just put a hold on a book at the library "Bella-Bella Quilts"-Jennifer's inspired me :) - if the library ever opens again~LOL.

We are getting a tiny bit of sleet and snow here just south of Nashville--but enough my sons are leaping and air punching shouting "Yes! YES!" Probably no school tomorrow. :) Southern boys, they keep opening the back door and standing there to confirm snow. Close the door you loonies!

RE: Weather better???????????

Our back yard is still under water, and we are expecting snow flurries tomorrow, and accumulation on Friday. I am so ready for spring.

RE: Weather better???????????

I saw a little bit of sun today here in the TN valley. Rain/snow flurries for tomorrow. We have been flooding here with so much rain. We had 4" ice/snow last weekend. Wow, Rivergirl, thermostat stays at 68° during the winter and our bill is only $165!

RE: Weather better???????????

It's beautiful in Orlando! Just chilly enough so we know it's winter. 40s at night; 60 during the day. We set the alarm last night to be up at 4am for the shuttle launch - its easily visible from my front yard - even at that time we only needed light jackets. Its supposed to be rainy tomorrow but we're going over to the Florida state fair in Tampa.

I can really sympathize with those poor people who are being blasted with all of the snow. Although this has been a pretty light year for us I have been there and lived with the frustration of winter. The difference being it is what we expect and have the equipment to deal with it. My heart goes out to those of you who can't be prepared for the unexpected. I can only pray that I will be a one time experience for you and spring brings warm skies and lots of beautiful flowers. Our temps have been from single digits to low 20's for the past few days and expected to continue with a 3"+ of snow, very little sunshine but it does peek through sometimes. Jayne

RE: Weather better???????????

Well, I do feel badly for those with more snow than they ever thought possible. Here in Mid-Michigan, we are in a "lake effect" snow belt area, but this has been an unusual winter. We get incredibly cold (near zero), some snow, but not much at a time (2"-3" perhaps), eventually decent accumulation. Then we get stretches of 40 degree-plus weather for a week or so, so there goes the snow.

I feel horribly for the farmers who have planted the winter wheat ... they need that snow pack to protect the crops, but it just is not happening this year. Bummer.

We are due for a big storm starting Tues. afternoon, with up to 9" by Wed. night. But we're prepared for it here; plenty of salt on hand and the snowplows do a great job keeping us all on the road.

I'm feeling horribly for those of you who live in warmer climes year-round; you're not accustomed to this cold and snow. But those snowbirds who flock to the warmer states to escape the cold, thinking they're so superior to those of us who can't, won't, or who choose not to, well .... this is God's way of saying, "you don't know everything!" lol

We are expecting lots of snow today and tomorrow. All the schools in the county are closed and snow started coming down overnight. We are supposed to get 8+ inches today with winds tonight. I have to work until 1:00PM today. I hope I can get in my driveway when I get home.

Being in the same general area as magothyrivergirl, I'm experiencing the same weather. Don't know where we are going to put 20 more inches of snow. Oh well, maybe all this moisture will bring beautiful flowers in the spring. Stay dry, stay safe and happy quilting.

Here in upstate NY, so called "snow country" we've had hardly any snow at all. I feel bad for all you folks that aren't used to it getting so bombarded with snow. It's truly a very unusual winter for all of us. Another snow storm coming tomorrow is predicted to miss us not that I'm complaining. Stay safe all.

RE: Weather better???????????

We missed the big storm that hit the mid Atlantic region last weekend, but are expecting another storm to hit tomorrow. My heat is set at 70 or 72 and I'm still cold. I don't care what it costs.

RE: Weather better???????????

We aren't snowbirds but moved away from northern Indiana/southern Michigan so DH wouldn't have a heart attack shoveling snow off the roof...or anywhere else, and I wouldn't be caught again in the middle of nowhere in a whiteout and in a ditch. When it gets cold here, we say at least we don't have to deal with the snow. I would think the best thing you in snow country could do would be to stay home and keep the woodburner going.

We keep the thermostat on 65 daytimes and 62 at night. On the bright side, the pot of hyacinths DD brought me for Easter last year that got left on the porch, decided they had been through winter and we now have flowers! I love their fragrance so DH brought them in and set them by the computer.

Do whatever you have to do to keep yourself and family safe.

RE: Weather better???????????

I'm in East Tennessee, but not far east enough, so we're only getting rain. I'm really tired of it as well. I'd like a good snow and we are always on the border of snow and rain. My kids are 7 and 8 and we've not had a really good snow where they can build a snowman. The last snow turned into an icy mess and was ok for sledding, but no snowman building.

RE: Weather better???????????

Yep, it is gray outside today. This time the weather man got 'it' right. My mood is better after getting 1 day of sunshine.
I have 'Fast Folded Flower Quilts' to entertain me today. I actually have so many hobbies that I don't get bored and I am not a moody person. But, I am a scorpio (or part lizard lol) and all of this gray does make me lazy.
Stay safe and warm, I know it is hard to sew and quilt wearing a coat, and keep us posted on how you are doing.
For some strange reason we lost electric last night for a few hours. It is back now but we didn't have bad weather last night.

RE: Weather better???????????

They had a report on our news this am that we've basically had the same snow fall amount total as the D.C. area - only it has come in mostly 1-2" amounts - only 3 snow falls were over 6". I'm thankful we have not had to do a lot of shoveling and my heart goes out to you who just seem to get one storm after another. I'm just growing weary of the cold temps - it is so rare to get above the freezing point Dec. thru Feb. I miss Colorado where we would get big snow and then bright sun. The snow is much easier to handle when the sun comes shortly after! We did have a beautiful sunrise this am with a shaft of bright pink light streaming up into the sky - then it settled into gray overcast.

RE: Weather better???????????

We're being slammed with another biggie and still not dug out under last week's. The horrid storm hitting the East started over our state when wet gulf air hit the huge cold and snow front coming from the west. This time the gulf front collided below us in Kentucky and W.V. So, we won't get the ice. Just snow. I haven't seen terra firm much this winter. Snows nearly every day but not too many big ones, just enough for snow cover. This is one of our good, old fashioned winters. Last summer was a 100 year record cold summer too. We've had miserably cold summers three years running. Yes, I am ready for spring and have a feeling that this year we may have an early and warm one.

RE: Weather better???????????

If I complain about the hot, humid, 100 degrees, drought days in August ---someone remind me of this winter.
Blizzard, whiteout conditions again. This is not normal for us! I have power - so that is good.

 o
RE: Weather better???????????

We've gotten about 8" of snow. It's slowing down now. Not as bad as it could have been.

Magothyrivergirl~Hang in there. It should stop sooN!

 o
RE: Weather better???????????

Jennifer, we had at least 8" when we got up this morning.
I keep trying to force myself to go out and shovel a spot for my dog, but she is only peeking out from beneath her quilt - she knows better!! Looking across the river, it is a blanket of sideways swirling snow, blowing like dust in the old west movies.

For those in Philly and above - it is headed your way sorry to say.

RE: Weather better???????????

Marge that is a smart dog lol!!!!!!! Today we have sun, surprise because the weather forecast was for rain. It is so windy that all of the covers have blown off my plants on the patio. But at least it is about 40. I have to figure out how to keep them covered before tonight. More than half of my plants are gone due to the weeks of cold temps. I have heard next week is going to be the same.
Calliope where are you that you have had cold summers? Here in SE coastal Georgia we have set record temps 2 summers in a row. It was so hot and humid July and August I had trouble breathing when I went outside.

RE: Weather better???????????

For sewing on my black catherdral windows, one Ott light wasn't enough. I got some bulbs off Ebay that were full sprectrum and rated for SAD. I put three 42 watt bulbs and a three way 250 watt regular bulb in a floor lamp and took off the shade. By gum, I can see black thread on black material at midnight. No kidding--my neighbor asked me what was going on just from seeing the lights on at night. Maybe she thought I was growing something illegal!

Anyway, they aren't on Ebay now, but my extra bulb still has the package so I looked them up. I've kept my lights on 10-12 hours a day (I got to where I just like them on, quilting or not) for 2 1/2 years and still haven't had to replace one. They take a few seconds to warm up, and they are wonderful to sew by. I don't sleep or feel any different, I always have liked winter, but they ARE the brightest lights I've ever seen and they last like they claim. (Not like the CFB you get at Home Depot!)

Here is a link that might be useful: Very, very, very bright light bulb
