Fabric obsession

A question was posted on another forum, when does collecting become hoarding??
We had this exact conversation in our fam years ago about my aunt. She had always 'collected' various things. They lived on 200 acres in the country and she had a barn to fill.
And she did LOL
My mother and her were always going to garage sales and thrift stores. She was a compulsive buyer and as Alzheimers slowly took her memory she still enjoyed shopping on her good days. She never really spent much money at one time, but over the years it did add up.
She was loved by everyone so we went in when she wasn't aware of it and took truck loads of dry rotted items to the dump. There were stacks in the barn of things over 20 years old.
I always thought much of her collecting was from growing up during the depression.
I saw the beautiful fabrics 50% off at Connecting Threads and I was so tempted!! But as I spent the day going through scraps and cutting them into squares for HST's I realized just how easy it is to become obsessed with fabric. I think if I buy any more this year before I use up my stash I will become a hoarder!!!!!!!!!!
My goal for this year is to get my sewing stuff organized and use from my stash. Unless it is baby fabric, I need more for the Downy kids. See what I mean LOL??????????

For us Fabrichalics, it is easier said then done. Those dear people who make fabric are always coming out with new designs and wonderful new colors. My goal is always to use my stash but today my DF took me shop hopping and what was I to do? Say No? No way! LOL Jayne

Nope, I'm not going to let myself go down that path.

My DH is verging on being a hoarder - who really needs a copy of "Weathering the Coming Financial Crisis" published in 1988? Or a 1972 Citroen SM (whom no one in Texas is qualified to repair)? A motorcycle he hasn't ridden in 12 years? Yet he has a problem letting go of this and so many other things. I have a hard time preventing him from buying more bookcases to store more books we don't read.

Don't even get me started on the plywood, 2x4's, sheets of particle board, plumbing supplies, etc. He has SO MUCH of this stuff, he can't find anything, and goes out and buys it again.

We work on it together. He knows his tendencies verge on the pathological, and he knows that the more room he takes up to store his stuff, the less room I have to live.

I buy and use fabrics by the project usually. Sometimes I see a fabric I love and buy a lot, but I then make a plan to use it. I keep scraps of fabrics I love - but not too many. And I never keep fabrics I no longer love. I have many places to donate them - Girl Scouts, 4H, Goodwill.

When it's something you will use I don't consider it "hoarding". In other words, if you are buying more fabric for your stash, and you regularly work with your stash, that's okay. You need to have something to work with; you can't create from thin air.

I run into the same problem, however. Money is getting tighter for us right now, but there I was today: doing a little online "window shopping" for fabrics! I didn't buy this time, but I have such trouble passing up a gorgeous fabric at an unbelievably low price. The problem is that I prefer to have my quilts "work", rather than just "make do". Not that I'm entering a bunch of contests here, but in the event I make something that just might end up being judged, I want it to look it's best, not just "okay"....

I'm a fabricaholic and don't care who knows it. I don't consider it hoarding as I draw from it as I go along. I like having lots to choose from as I design. I'd hate to have to run out for fabric everytime I started a new project as I keep four or five projects going at the same time. All that fabric and all those colors inspire me. Not ashamed at all!! Maybe I'll offer tours one day. Hmmmmm.

We're stimulating the economy! Buy, buy, buy!

I have stopped buying fabric just because. I buy when I have a project in mind and it takes up much less space. It's not hording if you are using it. My DH doesn't agree though!

I am a fabricaholic and a beadaholic and I am trying to make projects with what I have all the time but never hesitate to buy more when the spirit moves me:)

toolgranny, I love how you put it! that's exactly how I feel - I use from my stash all the time, have multiple projects going, & just like my pantry I don't want to have to go get something I need! It had better be there when I want/need it!! I know this comes from living in the country for yrs, & you can't just run out & pick up what you need. And today, with all this snow & our road not yet plowed, I couldn't get out to buy if I had to!! lol

RE: Fabric obsession

My whole quilt has been fabric obsession. 418 now, and I can say I'm tired of picking out fabric. I feel completely satiated. I think my retina is worn out.
