This is option 2.

DH says it has more visual impact.

Yup, this one gets my vote as well.

Of the two choices, I like this one best.

But have you tried other layouts? Think of these as log cabin blocks, and you also have a barn raising layout, or light/dark layouts with 'floating' diamonds.

All sorts of possibilities!

I like this one better, but would like to see examples of what Jennifer suggested (for my own edification mainly).

I like this better than option #1, but the floating diamonds are also a nice pattern.

I'm partial to this layout as opposed to the first one as well, but would try some of Jenn's suggestions as well.
