I requested my second kit from Quilts for Kids in early January, and just completed the kit plus a second one to send along. My wonderful DH took them to the post office this morning!

These photos are from the kit (forgive the bad photography, I'm waiting for my new glasses, LOL)

Just so cute. How generous you are to take time to make these special blankets.

Both are very pretty - I love the balloons - Did you zig zag the bindings?
Your quilting makes them so special.......The kids are going to love these quilts.

Those are so cute! I like the sashing on the balloon quilt. I have my second kit, but have not started on it. It has little girl fairies as the focal fabric.

Yes MRG, I used the same variegated thread and just zig-zagged the binding down on the front. They want the whole quilt closely quilted, and the binding machine stitched for strength.

Thanks Mary - I thought machine stitched bindings for kiddie quilts that are used alot are a good idea. Do you still use a double french binding? I ask because I'm learning (not just nosy:). I have a kid's eye spy I am going to donate, and I was thinking of using the backing double folded onto the front and machine stitched down using a blanket stitch, but a zig zag stitch would be much faster and probably more secured.
It is so kind of you to make these quilts.

Since I use my spiral pantograph pattern on the long arm, I can't just fold the backing up and over - too much ugly edge stitching as I move between motifs. But a folded over backing would work as well

I do use a French-fold binding. I stitch to the back, and attempt to just meet the fold on the front to the stitching line. I then zigzag on the front. I get a mostly balanced front to back stitch, but not always. Corners can be troublesome (yes, I had a much stronger word to use, LOL).

The children won't care, and I'm practicing to get better at this technique. But I probably wouldn't ever use it for any other type of quilt, either.

Thanks for explaining Mary. I admit I did look at your corners & stitching~ and thought it could be "troublesome".
I may also add more quilting on the I Spy since you said these people want it closely quilted. That makes since for a charity quilt for kids.

Mary, Only SEVEN yards??? LOLOLOL It really is a fabric to love, isn't it. I predict you'll get a lot of mileage out of it, too. Great job on the quilts. @:)

I'm piecing my kit and accompanying second quilt this weekend, hope to use them to practice LongArm quilting. Mary, I love that balloon fabric, too, and I love the pattern. It makes it look like a balloon race outside the window! What is the pattern for the stars in the corners? More beautiful quilts and quilting from you!

RE: Round 2 - Quilts for Kids

The star sashing is really quite simple, though a bit fussy, LOL.

In this case I used 1.25" strips and stitched 3 together, which gives a 2.75" sashing strip. I cut the strips to the block size, and then added (2) 1 5/8" squares to the ends, stitching diagonally. Trim and press. Use a 2.75" square as the cornerstone with the sashing.

Note that some sashing strips have 4 squares (2 on each end), while others have just one end with the squares.

One can also use just a solid 2.75" strip of fabric for the sashing, rather than a pieced strip.

These measurement came from the Singer Sewing Reference Library "Quilt Projects by Machine". I used them as is with 8" blocks because that size worked well for the kid quilt size the foundation wants.
