I have a quilt hoop that pivots. It stands on a tripod. I got it at a secondhand store. I got it for only 30 or 40 dollars! I forget exactly. It looks just like the stand in the picture at the top of this pagehref> so I think it is by Hinterberg.

The wood is unfinished, and expands and contracts with the moisture level in the air, so the screws that tighten various parts get a bit sticky at times, but I LOVE THIS HOOP because it pivots. I have not learned how to quilt in any direction, as have some quilters. This would be necessary with a large floor frame, the type you see in old photos of quilting bees.

There are also lap hoops. That would be more portable. There was one used in a video we were all looking at on this forum. Here's the link.href> Downloading the video is very slow if you are on dialup, but I found it VERY worthwhile, even though it took hours. (Hope you have better luck--or a faster connection!)

Another option is a hoop. Just a large hoop. Mine is plastic and came from Joann's. I use that when I want to quilt on the road.

Or else, when the quilt is very small, I use no hoop at all.

Welcome Coleen.I don't usually look at this side of the forum, but just checked it today and saw your post. I had a round quilt hoop that stood on a tripod. It went missing when we moved,or at least parts of it did.I liked it for quilting, except I found it difficult to tighten the screws. I didn't have the hand strength to do it and always had to call on hubby to help. I hope you enjoy the forum.I joined in July,so I'm still new,but everyone is friendly.

There is a tool that helps to tighten the wing nuts. Perhaps I should get one. It's called TwistEase.href>
