Awful! See if the vet or any books can suggest a supplement to prevent the urinary blockage from happening again. It happened to our male cat once in Japan and they gave me some white powder to put in his food. Wet foods are preferable to dry, if he'll eat them. At any rate, there are foods, at least the dry ones (which one of our cats insists on), that have on the package that they are good for avoiding urinary problems.

Did the cat have to be operated on? $800 seems awfully high to me for a mere catheterization and one night in the hospital. Though I have to admit we have in total spent a couple thousand on one of our cats, what with stomach problems and operations to remove mast cell tumors. You might want to post on the GW pets forum and see what experiences others have had with problems like your daughter's cat's. Some of the people there are very knowledgeable.
