Deck Care

Keeping decks well protected is a big challenge. The wood is in a horizontal position, full of nail holes allowing water to seep into the wood where it will swell, shrink and warp the wood and stress your stain or coating system. Wood that is inaccessible , such as end grain, can't be properly sealed once the deck is already constructed. Most times, furniture scrapes the surface, people and dogs track grit and mud on it, and Mother Nature takes a toll.

Many deck / dock / log / wood sealers and stain product reviews or comparisons rate products in a laboratory setting, and fail to consider the beauty of the wood. Most deck staining products we see advertised and endorsed carry false or unrealistic claims with respect to longevity. They fail to account for the frequent maintenance required . Many end up looking "paint-like", and lead to eventual stripping. Many contain wax or silicone, which both contaminate the surface for future coating, leading to buildup, frequent maintenance and inadequate protection. Most wax-containing and linseed oil-containing products lead to eventual stripping.

A product we discovered in recent years is One TIME Wood Protector. It is uniquely long-lasting, offering double the life of anything we have tested. One TIME is very natural looking compared to many stains available. We believe solvent free One TIME Wood Protector is good choice with respect to environmental issues and ease of maintenance. This is a great choice for docks, and severe exposure. It offers beautiful protection with extended easy maintenance procedures. One TIME is simply the longest lasting deck protector we have used and tested after more than 25 years in the business. One TIME is not shiny, and gives a natural looking beauty to the wood. One TIME is our most recommended product to our clients.

RE: Deck Care

Its always the folks that sell outdoor finish that recomend pre finish on all four sides. I understnad that business is business the more you sell the more you make.

Just looking at this one part of your blog/site/ sales area whatever is incorect in a lot of ways.

Say the pre finish goes on,not even going into the problems with space/time/ drying time with your product, nothing goes wrong. The installer is going to scuff up/scrach and generaly mar up the top side so that has to be repaired after the decking is down using your stuff takes a long set up so more time good weather is invloved. Side note>> using one time finish means you have to use it for ever geting it off would be a big time problem<<

Say thats not a problem, ya right, what have you done??? The bottom side of the decking is sealed however the top side is exposed to the Sun...the finish will break down... leting water thru the decking..its not able to get out quickily so it sits in the decking. The pre finish all around on 4 sides has worked in reverse.

What will this rerverse or anti action cause?? with cedar rot/mildew/mold will start even more quickley than is usually does, with Redwood there will be no effect at + or - all thus waisting a lot of time and money, With South American lumber it will cause the decking to cup but have no effect on life just looks. Preasure treated lumber used as decking is going to warp/twist/splinter and generaly go into a fit like a two year old exposed to the sun no matter how it is finished or fastened again you have waisted time and money.

I like the idea of you saying your Co has done field testing up against lab testing. I also have done real field testing on my projects over the years and found the results to be listed above.

The decking installed low to grade or high above it has got to breathe, that is exposed to cross vintalation not only under it but in it.Pre finish on all four sides will work against this, cost money and time, result in a sub grade install but will sell double or more finish product. This is not new info any high end paint store is aware of it as well as a quick google.

But I still like your stile never stop selling. JonMon

RE: Deck Care

Hey paintsource,
Send a sample of that miracle product. Just a couple of ounces to test on some scrap pieces of lumber. Send me a personal e-mail and I'll give you my address:

aidan@slac.stanford.edu

I haven't even met any contractors who use this product, so if it is as good as you say, let's get the word out.

Aidan
