Need primer before stain?

Hi I have another question I know you will have the answer. We have a porch, pressure treated wood, previously stained with Cabot's Solid color oil decking stain. The area we want to re-do has been power washed. Two of the steps have been sanded to the wood. The rest were just washed. Do we need to apply primer to the bare wood before staining? I don't know whether primer was used in the original application which was about 3 years ago. The guy in the paint store said we need to use primer. The can of Cabot's doesn't say we need primer. Please help. Thanks.

If no one experienced with decks chimes in.... When refinishing furniture I have used pre-stain conditioner, and more recently I haven't. MAYBE I notice a difference with the conditioner or primer. I think it helps any imperfect parts of the wood, or parts of the wood which have been exposed to oils absorb stain.

I have used solid stains in the past with no primer with very good results.

We used Cabots on our facia, soffit, exterior trim materials with out a primer. I've never heard of a primer for exterior/interior stains, but that doesn't mean it's not around. Wood conditioners are good when staining interior trims/woodwork for more even staining dependent on the wood species. You might cruise on over to the paint forum for expert adviise as well.
