Deck Handrail install

We are in the process of replacing the stairs on an old deck.

The length of the stringers are about 8' 8" and are made from 2x12 pressure treated lumber and is 36" wide.

what is the best way to attach the posts?

Where should the post at the bottom be located, in front of the first step or next to it? the top one is located outside of the stringers.

Do I need a middle post for this length?

How long can the handrail be unsupported (except fromt he ends)?

Currently my deck railing has 2x6 as the railing. the old one had this for the hand rail which is not graspable.

What should I use for the handrail?

I live in Plainview, NY

Any additional info would be appreciated.

thanks

Frank
