Redwood Deck Stain question

Had a new redwood deck put in a year ago, part of the contingencies of our house purchase. The contractor said to let the wood age for a year then put on a stain, something about the stain will crack and bubble from the acidity in the unaged wood. From reading other threads, not sure if that was the correct thing to do.

Regardless, that is my situation. Wanted something that would bring the wood similar to the redness when it was put in. Any recommendations?

This is the first time I have ever stained a deck and not very handy ... just so you know your audience.

Never wait for anything but good weather to put the finish on an outside project.

We will actually allow redwood to dry a month or so, but not for the reasons stated. I just feel, the drier the surface is, the better the penetration.

There is no stain/sealer that will look like fresh redwood. The approximations are not even close. Basically your choices are on the brownish side or the orange/red side. I would suggest sampling on scraps of the same material. Don't rely on the sample sticks, which are not the same as your material.

You will most likely have to clean and prep, as John says. Do not use a pressure washer. The redwood is too soft for anyone but the most experienced users.
