Replacing T1-11 siding...want to do it right.

I have a section of T1-11 exterior siding that has some rot issues and I am going to replace. It is trimmed with cedar boards that are flush with the wood decking and have been sealed with silicon.

Having never done this before, I'm looking for advice on the correct way to replace these panels and finish the trim off.

I've pulled a small section away and there is no vapor barrier either.

Do I leave a gap when installing the trim or do I just paint the edges and install it flush with the deck boards as the builder did? Do i seal the bottom?

Thanks for any thoughts on this issue.
