pergola height issue

I am seeing some minor issue but was hoping if there are fixes. There is one post that I didn't notice was too low. It's 4" lower than other post. :( Looks like we dug the hole too deep. All other 5 post's height is close maybe 0.5"-1" difference.

So this evening, I did some measurement. The girder will be a 2"x8"x12'. In real life measurement, the 8" is only really 7.5". So what I had to do is used the lowest post and minus 7.5" so that the girder is well flushed with the top face of that post. I ran a string to the other end post then leveled it. Based from my measurement, I will have to cut 4". The height though from patio floor to the bottom face of the girder will be 92" or 7ft 8inches rather than what I really planned, 8ft bottom face to floor. :(

What do you think folks? It's minor but I was hoping I can increase the height a little more.

Thanks everyone! I added just 1.5" and it's looking better. My horizontal girders are now higher than the lowest post.

I'm so happy with the way it's looking right now even if it's not finished yet. :) hehehe. I'll be back to take a picture then I'll post it here. Oh, it's just this evening that I installed the two 2 24 ft girders. They're actually 4 separate 12 ft long 2x8s.

You can cheat a little...the beam tops don't have to be level with the post tops. Anyway, 7'8" is plenty of clearance under the beam.

I agree with everything Steve says. 7'8" should be plenty high, unless it interferes with views.

Your pergola looks great! I was thinking of building one and was wondering: what material did you use, cedar or treated yellow pine? How have your 2 x 8 girders held up?

I would really need to cover a distance of 16 feet with my girders but don't want to have more than two posts, one on each end. Nonetheless, I was curious if the 2 x 8s have twisted or anything. And then the span of my rafters across the girders would be 12' 4" at one point due to post placement around windows.

Can anyone give me advice? Thanks
