How much checking is normal in a cedar post?

I had a gazebo built last summer and several of the posts have checking in them. I know that checking is normal with cedar, but my checks seems to be unusually large and run almost the length of the columns. I've attached a pic. Any thoughts on this? Should I have the contractor come back and fix this?

Total Normal.

That is the nature of the material exposed to the sun.

I wouldn't say that is totally normal, but it can happen.

The only way to limit checking of exterior wood is to get dry (expensive) material, and protect it.
