Suggestions for my Custom Built Pergola

I just had this Pergola custom built . Now I need some advice if I should hang Or plant vines, flowers etc. on it, or just use hanging flowers in pots? I love the look of beautiful colorful flowers, but I have to be careful of deer. Also, I would like something year round. Since it is wood, I was told if I do cover it with plants it could mold. Any advice will be appreciated.
