Carport (similar to porch covering?) roof material

Hi everyone,

We're thinking of building a lean-to carport (attached to the house on one side), but because of the location, it would essentially cover both of our kitchen windows. We're east-facing, so it only gets morning light anyway, and is dim the rest of the day.

Basically, we're wondering if there is any kind of roofing material out there that we can use which is light-transmitting? We just want to preserve as much of the light as we can.

The catch is that we live in Utah where we get a lot of snow in winter, so it has to be able to withstand heavy snow loads. And high heat in the summer, though I don't know if that makes a difference.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

April

PS... I posted this here because the style and type of construction seem similar to what is often used as a porch covering. But I also posted this over in the garage forum, I hope this is considered ok!
