Laying on a diagonal can look nice, but generally will make your decking a bit more "springy" That's because the distance, on the diagonal, between the joists will be greater. Accordingly, you might choose to have the joists installed on 12" centers, rather than 16", to support the diagonal lay of the decking.

If someone recommends composite decking, it would be best to check with the manufacturer. Some brands recommend 12" on center joists for standard install.

I checked out a neighbor's deck which is a bit springy and we don't want that.
