 o
Deck Board Spacing

Using composite. Temps are in the 80s - low 90s. What spacing should I use between boards, both side by side and at butt joints. Manufacturer says 1/4", but that sure seems big to me. Plus, I hate it when they shrink up and the gaps get even bigger. Thanks.

RE: Deck Board Spacing

Composite doesn't shrink. It may grow in the heat. That is why the butt joint spacing is critical. Butt the ends tight and you'll end up with a wavy deck, if the sun shines directly on it.

Call the manufacturer and see if they'll warranty an install done with 3/16" gaps. I suspect they call for 1/4" to ensure maximum drainage and ventilation.
