Question on deck repair

I need help! I want to get a few more years from my wood deck. It is rotting down the mid-line, where the boards join. I plan on cutting up the 16" on either side of the main joist, and replacing the boards. The joists on either side seem fairly strong and rot-free. I do NOT want to replace each entire board, just the few feet that are rotting. I know this may not be ideal, but does it sound feasible? I will probably have to replace the main joist too, or maybe "sister" it so the new repairs will have something on which to attach.
Is there a better way to do this?
