can I remove part of the deck ledger board??

In order to reach a rotted rim joist to which the deck ledger board is bolted, I need to remove at least part of the ledger board, obviously. As I don't wish to dissemble the entire deck, is it likely a contractor can take up enough boards to allow access to the problem, cut only enough ledger board to allow him to access the rim joist, do the repair, then bolt back a replacement section of the ledger board? The deck boards run parallel to this part of the wall. I assume some of the joists will need to cut short to allow access.
