Picnic bench care

I bought an old-style picnic benches (60 inches). It is already stained (dark), but I wonder if it is worthwhile to put some sort of protective coat on it? It's not expensive, but since it is going to sit outdoors, is there anything I can use? Or not bother?

RE: Picnic bench care

It probably depends upon the wood species. If it is redwood, teak or even cedar, a quality wood oil will help keep the surface smooth. Just clean well and allow to dry several days before applying. If it is a lesser grade wood (like pine), oil will help but you're still going to experience surface deterioration with sun/weather.
